When it comes to relishing prawn recipes, nothing can match the lip-smacking taste of a homemade prawn chilli fry. A sizzling combination of fresh prawns, chillies, and sauces results in a great starter or main course. Couple it with rice, roti, or other kinds of bread.

What are prawns?

Want to know more about your favourite seafood? Prawn is the common name for tiny, aquatic, clawed crustaceans with ten legs and an exoskeleton.

While this category can include both the smaller saltwater shrimp and the bigger freshwater prawns, we’re talking about the latter, which have claws on three of their legs. Interestingly, prawns and shrimps have similar textures. But prawns taste meatier and sweeter than shrimps, so it’s no wonder they’re more desired.

India has a lush variety of seafood. The four main varieties of prawn you’d find in our country are white banana prawn, flower prawn, tiger prawn, and most unforgettably: king prawn. But no matter which variety you choose, you’ll love the delicious flavour they add to any recipe.

Where are prawns found in India?

Wondering where juicy prawns come from? Prawns are found abundantly in West Bengal, Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, and the Union Territory of Pondicherry.

What is the texture of prawns?

Prawns have an extremely firm texture, due to which they stand up well no matter grilled or boiled. Like prawns completely soaked in sauces? If yes, go for freshwater prawns as they have a softer texture and mild flavor. They easily absorb the rubs or sauces they are cooked with.

What exactly do prawns taste like?

Prawns taste similar to shrimps. Having said that, a few feel that shrimps are more delicate in flavor than prawns, as prawns taste slightly meatier and sweeter. Prawns are thus a perfect and versatile seafood party starter popular all over the world. When cooked in their shells, they cook quickly.

How nutritious are prawns?

Prawns are packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory nutrients and have a high content of omega-3 fatty acids. Prawns are also dense in minerals and vitamins. All of this makes prawns a valuable addition to a healthy diet.

Instructions
  1. Marinate the prawns with turmeric powder, lemon juice, and a tiny amount of salt. Keep them aside for 10 mins.
  2. Heat 2-3 tablespoons of oil in a pan. Add the sliced tomatoes and onions with a bit of salt. Saute for 1-2 minutes.
  3. Add the garlic and ginger to the pan and stir fry till the raw smell of the garlic and ginger disappears.
  4. Then, add the roughly chopped chillies and fry them along with the paste on low to medium heat until the onions turn translucent.
  5. Add the marinated prawns. Continue to stir fry until the prawns are almost cooked.
  6. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves. Your prawn chilli fry is now ready to be served.
Recipe Notes

Psst… If you prefer crispy prawns, fry them on high-medium heat. If the heat is low, the prawns will not turn crunchy. But be mindful not to turn up the heat too high, or else the prawns could burn. A simple dish, but a delicious year-round snack! For an even easier snack, you could order our ready-to-fry prawn cutlets. They are freshly marinated, covered in panko breadcrumbs for extra crunch, and can be done in 8 minutes! All you need to do is open, fry & serve. The best part is they aren’t frozen, they are chilled!
