  1. Rub a little turmeric powder and salt into the Roopchand Steaks and set them aside for 10 minutes.
  2. In a grinder, prepare a paste of the mustard seeds by grinding them with a little water.
  3. Mix a bit of salt with the mustard paste and keep it aside for 15 minutes.
  4. Next, prepare a paste of tomato, salt, water, and poppy seeds to enhance the taste and texture of the gravy.
  5. Add 2 tbsp of mustard oil to a pan and heat it adequately.
  6. It is time to fry the fish pieces on medium heat until the fish steaks turn golden brown on both sides.
  7. Place the fish steaks on absorbent paper to get rid of excess oil. Keep them aside.
  8. In that same oil, add the prepared tomato paste. Cook for around 5 minutes until the fragrance of uncooked tomatoes vanishes.
  9. Add turmeric powder and salt to the gravy.
  10. You can add some Kashmiri red chilli powder to give a rich colour to the gravy.
  11. Now add the mustard paste and let it cook for 1 more minute.
  12. Time to add 3 cups of water to the pan.
  13. Bring the mixture to a boil.
  14. Finally, it is time to add the fried Roopchand Steaks to the gravy.
  15. Cook for around 10 minutes on medium flame, then flip over the fried fish pieces. It will ensure the fish is coated properly and uniformly on both sides with the mustard gravy.
  16. Cook for 2 more minutes after adding 1 tbsp of raw mustard oil to the gravy.
  17. Serve hot Shorshe Roopchand diye Macher Jhal with steamed rice.
