The grey mullet fish can live up to 25 years of age which is quite rare. Not only this, the grey mullet matures very slowly and gradually. The maturity for the grey mullet fish occurs at nearly 11 years of age. They thrive in seawater and lay eggs in abundance. This variety of fish is quite wide and diverse. 

Grey mullet has numerous names in different regions of the world. It is known as madava fish in India. Some of its other names include common mullet, sea mullet, bully mullet, striped mullet, flathead grey mullet, Formosan grey mullet, black true mullet and Galapagos mullet.

The grey mullet is olive green in colour with silvery sides. It can grow as long as 50 centimetres. It feeds on algae as well as other vegetarian fodder.
